As 2009 drew to a close, I still could not believe that bed bugs had sucked up my first year of reentry into the country. But the episode had not been without its silver linings.

By fall 2009, I was sick of sleeping on the air mattress that had been my bed since shortly after my June bedbug discovery. Essentially I was sleeping on the floor. Besides literally bringing me down, it was hard on my knees every time I had to heave myself up.

 In mid-July 2009, about six weeks after finding four bed bugs marching across my mattress, I found myself teetering among sealed plastic bags of possessions and enduring a ruined summer while I waited to see if I’d get bitten again.
