My apartment has very high ceilings. Whoever constructed or renovated the place took advantage of this by building a series of enormous loft-like shelves. The shelf in my bedroom is big enough to fit a full-sized mattress, a few storage containers, and me, as long as I don’t sit up all the way.
It's true that in the six months I’ve been living here, I’ve found some endearing qualities about sleeping on a shelf.

I had just wrapped up 18 months with an egregiously noisy pair of roommates, who taught me that indoor racket was something I couldn't tolerate. So when searching for a new apartment share, I told myself I would only move in to a place with quiet cohabitants.

I fought a battle with bed bugs over a year ago. After losing a mattress and new bed, I advanced on the critters with powders and poison, dry cleaning and heat. Three months and nearly $600 later, they retreated and I rebuilt. I’d like to say I won, but I’m not sure I did. As far as I’m concerned, I’m in bed bug remission.

Over the past two years, I've lived in two separate apartment shares. Shares appeal to me, because they're super affordable, and they don't require me to stay tied to a place for any given amount of time. Since I'm young and not sure what my next move is, I'm reluctant to settle down or invest in home furnishings, if in a year an opportunity will arise and force me to pack everything up and start over again.
